The Story

It’s 1986. A strange disease is making its way from the big cities to the folks out in cowboy country. Two cowboys meet in a bar called the Oracle. One, Eddy Tyrone, is a ranch hand from Corinth, and the other, a young guy named Ned, is from Thebes. It’s the only watering hole for miles where two buds can practice the two-step and not have to worry whose watching. Eddy Tyrone and Ned start talking about sitting on a porch somewhere, watching sunsets together, listening to Willie Nelson, and before you know it Fate takes a hand and they’re on the dance floor like a thirsty bull to water. Next morning both men are feeling pretty lucky. Thebes and Corinth – what are the chances? But questions crop up about Eddy’s wandering years, the time he spent out in San Francisco. Eddy has some purple spots on his back that won’t quit either. Ned doesn’t know to run from love or stick to what his heart is saying. In the end, Ed decides to face up to his past and forces Ned into a public affirmation of their relationship.

This modern romantic story, like Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain, explores the will to love when the odds are stacked against you. And with a hint of Greek tragedy – Oedipus Rex – this powerful ballad takes on the universal themes: how fortune can turn on you, what road you choose to travel, finding yourself. But unlike Brokeback or Oedipus, there is no tragedy here. Just life-affirmation. As ‘Miss Tammy Why-not’ tells it to her fans at the Oracle nightclub: “No queer hangin’ here! No Divine justice! No superstitious crap! We lookin’ at this frickin’ virus and showin’ how we stand up to this thing that come uninvited into our waterin’ hole.”
